Having worked in the VR and AR field for over 7 years I can tell you that it is not geared for wargames training in any way , most people get really bad headaches or puke if they use VR or AR for even a short period of time, and people who use any vision correction of any sort have a real problem using it. I have worked with and found that AR is a possibility for things like maintenance and DC aspects - look up a company called Kognitiv Spark for a good use case. . The Royal Canadian Navy has just started a new initiative to utilise an analogue training system for the NAVRES, called "Following Seas - TF Command", rolling out to all reserve units this year, that was developed by the CJWC and inspired in part by the RN Tactical Wargaming system developed by the RN MWC. This is used in conjunction with a digital system using Command PE, from Matrix Games, an award winning UK software house.

Wow, the part about using synthetic environments for training really stood out to me. It's fascinating how effectively tecnology is being leveraged; I wonder how it affects the learning curve for new recruits compared to traditional methods?

I love the sentiment here, but fear the Royal Navy's culture of anti-intellectualism, and lack of funding, will see this die.

I tried to introduce Command Modern Operations (or ateast, it's predecessor) to MWS back in 2018, but adoption stalled due to some of the factors above as well as some over-zealous fears about it undermining the slide-based training that had been 'assured.'

With more AI replacing busywork, and uncrewed systems requiring new doctrine and ways of thinking, I would hope that there's more time for wargaming. And cardboard is probably the best starter for 10. But we need competitions within the RN, wider Services and academia, with prizes and publicity for winners. We do it for phys (with extra leave for representstive sport, and the recruitment adverts for the RN make a big play of the gyms, etc). But where is the same for wargaming?
